Choose the shape of your day

Three ways to spend
a full day in Sintra.

Start with the balance you would enjoy: one visit and the coast, more monument time, or a day focused on the palaces and history.

01 · OUR USUAL RECOMMENDATION

One monument
+ the coast & Cascais.

Choose one visit you really want, then let the day open out towards the Atlantic.

  1. Your chosen monument
  2. Azenhas do Mar
  3. Cabo da Roca
  4. Cascais
  5. Return to Lisbon

A varied day of stories, scenery and sea air. Make room for lunch along the route.

02 · A LITTLE MORE PALACE TIME

Two monuments
+ the historic centre.

Make the visits and the old town the main plan. Add one coastal stop only if the day's timing allows.

  • Two selected monument visits
  • Sintra's historic centre
  • Optional: Azenhas do Mar or Cabo da Roca or Cascais
  • Your planned return

Pena terraces + Regaleira is one possible pairing. Choose one coastal direction, rather than all three.

03 · FOR MONUMENT LOVERS

Three monuments
+ the historic centre.

Focus the day on your selected visits and time in the historic centre. Leave the coast for another day.

  • Three selected monument visits
  • Sintra's historic centre
  • Lunch and your planned return

The most intensive option, with more walking and journeys. Choose it because you love the visits, rather than to complete a list.

These are Full-Day planning models. The final balance depends on entry times, season, travel and your group's pace. A Pena terraces visit counts as a monument visit here; it does not mean entering the palace rooms. Your return can be adapted during planning if you are staying in Sintra or Cascais.

See the difference before you choose

Which monument feels
like your kind of day?

Each place offers a different experience. Here is what we recommend and the walking to expect.

Pena Palace's yellow and red towers above the green hills of Sintra

For colour, views & the iconic setting

Pena Palace terraces

Our recommendation: the terraces. Enjoy the colours, architecture and views without making the room-by-room palace visit the focus.

Choose Visit to the Park of Pena, which includes the terraces. Palace rooms are a different visit. There is still walking between the park entrance and the palace.

Quinta da Regaleira's ornate palace and garden staircase

For gardens, mystery & storytelling

Quinta da Regaleira

Our usual first recommendation for stories and symbolism. Give the gardens, tunnels and details time, rather than making the Initiation Well your only stop.

Expect slopes, uneven paths and steps. Your timed ticket admits you to the estate; it does not reserve a separate time at the well.

Carved arches and circular facade of Monserrate Palace, before restoration works

For gardens & beautiful architecture

Monserrate Palace & Park

Daniel's personal favourite. Make time for the palace and gardens, especially if you enjoy looking closely at architecture and plants.

A demanding walk: a significant descent to the palace and an uphill return; exploring more gardens adds to it.

The palace remains open during restoration, with scaffolding affecting the exterior. This photo predates the works. Current restoration notice ↗

The winding stone walls and towers of the Moorish Castle above Sintra

For active explorers & open views

The Moorish Castle

Choose it for the walls, towers and landscape. It is an outdoor, active visit, rather than a palace with furnished rooms.

High physical effort: steep steps, uneven surfaces and exposed walls. Consider your group's knees, walking confidence and the weather.

The white National Palace of Sintra, its red roofs and two conical chimneys above the historic town square

For royal history & time in the old town

National Palace of Sintra

The palace with the two white chimneys, right in the historic centre. Choose it for royal rooms, decorated ceilings, tiles and the stories of Portugal's court.

A convenient town-centre visit: easy to combine with exploring the old town, with much of the visit indoors. Check accessibility details for your group if steps are a concern.

Biester Palace's pointed tower, decorated facade and garden on a sunny day

For Romantic architecture & a wooded park

Biester Palace & Park

A nineteenth-century house with distinctive roofs, richly decorated rooms and a leafy park. A lovely option if architecture and a less obvious Sintra visit appeal to you.

Moderate walking: leave time for the park as well as the rooms. Check the visit details and choose a route to suit your group's walking preferences.

Getting to Sintra from Lisbon

Train, Uber
or a tour with a guide?

Three straightforward options. Choose the balance of cost, independence and coordination that suits your trip.

Lowest cost

Take the train.

Usually the cheapest way to reach Sintra from Lisbon: €2.55 per adult, one way from Rossio to Sintra (four zones), or €5.10 return.

About 40–45 minutes on the train, station to station. Allow extra time to buy tickets and reach your first monument.

Add €0.50 for a reusable Navegante Occasional card if you do not already have one. Validate your ticket before boarding.

Check for strikes and disruption. Strikes can affect services. Check CP's notices before leaving.

Convenient & good value

Book an Uber.

A reliable, often affordable choice from your accommodation to Sintra. As a rough guide, budget €20–25 per car, one way from Lisbon to Sintra — especially good value when sharing the fare with your group.

Allow around 30–45 minutes of driving from central Lisbon in light traffic. This is a planning estimate; busy periods can take longer. Add the wait for your driver.

Check the live fare, pickup and arrival estimate in the app. Reaching Sintra is one journey; moving between monuments and finding a return ride are separate parts of your plan.

An approximate fare, not a fixed quote. Your pickup, drop-off, ride option, demand and traffic can change the price.

Our pick for a coordinated day

Go with a local guide.

Our recommendation for the most reliable, efficient day: arrange pickup, the route and the return with one team, and enjoy the places with local context.

All-Inclusive includes hotel pickup in Sintra, Lisbon or Cascais. Personalized starts in Sintra; a private transfer is an optional extra.

The right website matters.

Use the links below when arranging your own visit. Check the domain before paying: reseller pages can add markups, and misleading ticket websites exist.

Put the route before the tickets. A palace-room entry slot at Pena is different from reaching the park entrance. Regaleira's slot is for entering the estate. Leave time for walking, travel and queues between visits.

Booking a YYD tour? All-Inclusive includes the agreed monument tickets, arranged by the team. Personalized guests buy their tickets separately with our timing guidance. Coordinate your route first and avoid buying the same admission twice.

A local pause worth making time for

A taste of Colares,
right in the historic centre.

Wine can be a lovely part of a Sintra day. For an independent tasting, our recommendation is Bar do Binho, in Praça da República, in the historic centre.

Ask about the wines of Colares and tell the team what you enjoy drinking. Leave space to listen and taste, rather than fitting it between two rushed entries.

Tell them Daniel and Yes, You Deserve sent you.

For an independent visit, ask the bar about its current tasting choices and prices. A tasting arranged as part of a YYD tour follows the tour's own inclusions.

A little guide to Paulo Cruz

The person behind
Bar do Binho.

Paulo Cruz is the Portuguese wine specialist behind the shop, also known as The House of Port. The family business dates to 1927, and Paulo developed its focus on Port and wine education.

What to ask about: a Colares tasting for the local region, or Port and other fortified wines if you would like a different style of experience. They are different tastings.

Paulo hosts many of the curated tastings. If he is not there, an experienced colleague can guide the experience.

Two good ways to enjoy it

Make your own plan,
or let a local team arrange it.

The right choice depends on how much you enjoy arranging the details and how you would like to spend your day.

Happy to organise the day?

Explore independently.

A good fit if you enjoy setting your own route and are comfortable coordinating the practical parts.

  • Choose your visits and buy the right tickets.
  • Arrange transport between the places you pick.
  • Keep space for lunch, walking and delays.

Prefer the day taken care of?

Go with your own local guide.

A private Sintra tour brings the route, local knowledge and tour transport together for your group.

  • Personalized: meet in Sintra; tickets and extras are separate.
  • All-Inclusive: hotel pickup in Sintra, Lisbon or Cascais, agreed tickets and return arranged.
  • Choose four or eight hours. Full-Day All-Inclusive also includes lunch.

A few useful answers

Before you set off.

Start with a workable day. You can always save something lovely for another visit.

Is one day enough for Sintra?
One full day can be a lovely introduction if you choose your priorities. It will not cover every palace and the whole coast comfortably. Two days gives you more room to spread visits out.
Can I visit Pena and Regaleira on the same day?
Yes. Our usual pairing is the terraces of Pena Palace and a visit to Regaleira. Keep time for the historic centre; one coastal stop may fit if the route allows. Coordinate the ticket options, travel and walking before buying. Read our team's detailed guide.
Should I book tickets before arriving?
Check availability and the official conditions before travelling, particularly for timed visits. First decide which places you want, how you will travel between them and the ticket option for each. Use the official links above for current information.
Is there much walking?
Yes, and it varies by monument. Regaleira has slopes and steps; Monserrate has a significant descent and uphill return; the Moorish Castle involves exposed walls and climbing. Choose for your group. On a YYD tour, the planning form after your deposit records walking preferences and access needs. Ask the team before booking if a specific requirement determines your choice.
Can All-Inclusive start at our hotel in Sintra?
Yes. You do not need to start in Lisbon. All-Inclusive can begin at your hotel in Sintra, with the pickup, visits and return agreed during planning. See pickup and tour details.
Can we finish in Cascais and return to our Sintra hotel?
Yes, on a planned All-Inclusive Full-Day. The tour can begin at your hotel in Sintra and the touring part can finish in Cascais. Your driver collects you there at the time agreed during planning and takes you back to your hotel in Sintra. Agree the finish and collection time with the team in advance.
