First, the journey from Lisbon
Choose the journey
that suits your first monument.
Lisbon to Sintra by train
Take the CP urban train from Rossio to Sintra station, the end of the line. Rossio is a useful departure point for central Lisbon. Allow roughly 40–45 minutes on the train, plus your journey to Rossio and the time to buy or load your ticket.
The published 2026 adult fare for Rossio–Sintra is €2.55 each way, or €5.10 return. A reusable Navegante Ocasional card costs another €0.50 if you need one. The train is our lowest-cost recommendation for a day starting in town or at Regaleira.
Strikes and other disruption can affect the line. CP's service notices below cover those date-specific interruptions.
Pena first? Take Uber directly from Lisbon.
This is our recommendation if Pena is your first visit: go directly from your Lisbon accommodation to Pena's park entrance. Taking the train and then booking an Uber from Sintra station adds a change of transport to the same uphill journey.
Arrive early, especially from April onwards. Aim for the opening part of the day. The park opens at 09:00 and the palace at 09:30. Your Uber reaches the park entrance; the internal park transfer takes you onwards towards the palace.
For Lisbon to Sintra town, our local budgeting reference is around €20–25 per car, one way, with roughly 30–45 minutes of driving in light traffic. The direct Pena journey includes the uphill leg and has its own fare. Uber displays the price before you book; demand, the pickup address and traffic affect it.
Our recommendations between the visits
Here is how we would
move around Sintra.
The 434: passenger experiences from 2026.
These examples come from the Sintra Tourist Bus 434 page on Tripadvisor, summarised here with their review dates:
- D J, 10 April 2026: reported losing about four hours across waits, delays and walks from drop-off points, and missing two of three visits they had bought tickets for. Read review ↗
- Almudena R, 12 August 2026: described waiting an hour at São Pedro with her family while buses passed without letting them board, then paying for an Uber instead. Read review ↗
- hervé j, 7 August 2026: reported a 30-minute wait followed by a journey of around 60–90 minutes towards Pena in a packed bus. Read review ↗
These are individual passengers' experiences. The dates above are when their reviews were published.

Historic centre and National Palace
For visitors comfortable walking, follow the route from Sintra station towards the historic centre and the National Palace. Allow around 10–15 minutes, with more time for photographs and stops. The palace is the white building with the two enormous chimneys.
Quinta da Regaleira: ask for the entrance, not the exit.
From the historic centre, continue on foot towards Regaleira if you are comfortable with the slopes and paving. For a ride, book Uber directly to Quinta da Regaleira's visitors' entrance and tell the driver that is where you want to get out.
A drop-off at the exit leaves about ten minutes of very steep uphill walking to the entrance. Be explicit about the entrance before the ride. There is also walking, uneven ground and stair climbing inside the estate.
Pena from Sintra: Uber or a local tuk-tuk.
If you are already at the station or in the historic centre, take Uber to Pena's park entrance. The palace itself is farther up inside the park. A local tuk-tuk ride from Sintra is another option, and a good guide can make that uphill journey enjoyable.
Daniel's local budgeting reference for that short tuk-tuk ride is around €10 per person for groups of three or more, or €15 per person for a couple. Prices vary between independent drivers. Agree the price and drop-off point before boarding, take a look at the tuk-tuk and spend a moment speaking with the guide.
The Moorish Castle has its own entrance on the mountain. Book it as a separate stop and keep time for its steps and walls; a ride up to Pena does not include a castle visit.
At Pena, we always recommend the internal transfer.
Add the transfer between the main park entrance and the palace. We save our legs wherever we can in Portugal: there is plenty of uphill and downhill walking in the rest of the day. The transfer covers the journey up and back within the park.
It is a separate ticket supplement. You still need monument admission, and there is walking around the terraces and the rest of the visit. For Pena's colours, views and setting, our usual choice is the park-and-terraces visit. Choose a palace-room visit if the interiors are a priority for you.
Monserrate: take Uber.
Uber is our recommendation for Monserrate. Set the destination to the entrance of the Park and Palace of Monserrate on the road towards Colares. The Monserrate Farmyard is a different place.
The ride saves the journey from town, but the visit itself still involves a descent through the gardens to the palace and an uphill return. Keep your walking energy for the gardens and architecture.
An independent day with breathing room
Regaleira first.
The season decides the start time.
For a straightforward day, give Regaleira and the historic centre the main space. Our recommendation changes with Regaleira's seasonal opening time.
- Apr–Sep
Book Regaleira for 09:00.
Go directly to the visitors' entrance for opening. Give the estate roughly two hours as a starting allowance, with longer for a slow exploration. Visit the historic centre afterwards, then stop for lunch.
- Oct–Mar
Old town first, then Regaleira from 10:00.
Enjoy a coffee and the historic centre around 09:00, then enter Regaleira at its 10:00 opening. A 10:30 booking gives you more time in town beforehand.
- The afternoon
Give your next choice its own space.
Stay with the historic centre and a proper lunch for the simplest day. If you would like the coast, use the journey plan below. For two monuments, follow the two-monument route in our itinerary guide.
If Pena is your main priority, start there instead: take Uber directly from Lisbon for the early part of the day, use the internal park transfer and enjoy the terraces. An Uber back towards town connects you with lunch and the historic centre.
Compare our three complete one-day itineraries →From Sintra to the Atlantic
Azenhas do Mar,
Cabo da Roca, then Cascais.
Our first recommendation is a local guide with the day's journeys planned together. It gives the monument visit, lunch and the coast one coherent route.
For a lower-budget independent day, separate Uber rides are a good option. Use this order: Sintra → Azenhas do Mar → Cabo da Roca → Cascais. Book each leg individually as you move through the afternoon.
Give the morning to one main monument before heading for the coast. In Cascais, enjoy the town and seafront. For Lisbon, take the train from Cascais station to Cais do Sodré; there is no need to go back to Sintra first.

Let one team connect
the visits and the journeys.
You can have a lovely independent visit. A private guide becomes useful when you would like help choosing the route, protecting ticket times, understanding the places and keeping the day connected.
Our Personalized tours start in Sintra, so you can arrive by train or Uber and meet the guide here. Our All-Inclusive experiences include hotel pickup and return in Sintra, Lisbon or Cascais. If your agreed route finishes in Cascais, the driver's collection time is arranged during planning.
Personalized and All-Inclusive have different ticket, meal and transfer inclusions. Compare the options before choosing. All tours are private, with the day's structure planned in advance.
Before you leave
A short check now
can save a lot of rushing later.
- Check CP service notices, Sintra's forecast and the monument's notices for your actual date.
- Leave room between timed visits for queues, transport and walking after the drop-off.
- Use Regaleira's official Blueticket platform ↗ and the Parques de Sintra ticket office ↗. For our Pena recommendation, choose the park-and-terraces visit and add the internal transfer.
- If booking All-Inclusive, coordinate with the team before buying monument tickets separately.
- Wear shoes with grip and choose a route that suits the least comfortable walker in your group.
The train fares above were checked against CP's published 2026 fare table. Journey times and the Uber budget are approximate planning references. Service, traffic and access conditions can change.
